Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy is the first young adult book I have read in 2018, which is so sad when I think about it!
Why did I wait so long to read this book?!?!?
A super fast summary: WillowDean Dickson or as her mom calls her Dumplin’ lives in small-town Texas, where the most important event of the year is the Miss Clover City beauty pageant. Willowdean does not fit the stereotype of a beauty queen – not in the slightest. She is neither thin nor tall nor talented at baton twirling. Yet when she decides to enter much to the shock of the school and her former beauty queen mother, she might just change the perception of what it means to be a beauty queen and more importantly beautiful. The book is full of Dolly Parton fangirl moments, high school love triangles, a lot of laughs and eff yeah moments.
The book draws you in from the first chapter. If you ever felt like an outcast in high school (who didn’t feel like this at least once?) or honestly even feel like an outcast as an adult, this is the book for you. Julie Murphy created a character with spunk and sass, who you can’t help but admire for her courage to “stick it to the man”. While the author mentions Willowdean’s weight, it was refreshing for her to show that Willowdean is so much more than pant size.
On a fun note: This is going to be a movie!!!!
